The Chaplain Superintendent

M. Ray Brewer, district superintendent of the Assemblies of God Northern Missouri District, last week became the first district leader to become an endorsed AG U.S. Missions chaplain in the Fellowship. The impetus to become a chaplain began stirring nearly three decades ago when Brewer sought his doctorate in seminary while on staff at Tiffany Fellowship in Kansas City. "I took a unit in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) that revealed my inadequacy in doing hospital ministry," Brewer recalls. "I learned to value the sacredness of everyone's story."

Wright Now: The Army’s Newest Chaplain Makes His Move for God and Country

There are more than 180 Assemblies of God Theological Seminary alumni currently serving as chaplains in the United States Armed Forces and Veteran's Administration. Many more serve as chaplains in hospitals and prisons around the United States. David Wright, a 2015 graduate of AGTS, is one of the most recent to answer the call to chaplaincy. Assigned in September as an infantry battalion chaplain in the 3-2 Stryker Brigade at Fort Lewis, Washington, Wright is ready to reach the military for Christ.

Trailblazing Continues

Assemblies of God U.S. Missions Chaplaincy Ministries Senior Director Manuel A. Cordero knew he had found the right person for a newly configured leadership position in Gloria Orengo Taylor. Taylor retired in 2014 after a combined 35 years as a chaplain, equally split between the military and hospitals. Cordero believed such experience made her the perfect candidate for the reshaped post of AG Chaplaincy Ministries Veterans Affairs/health care representative. Previously, duties for VA representation have been performed by Scott McChrystal, who has served as the military as well as VA representative and endorser since 2005. McChrystal will continue in the military role.

Living the Miracle

When boisterous Assemblies of God U.S. Missions Chaplain J. Durell Tuberville strolls the halls of Christus Schumpert Cancer Treatment Center, he feels a special affinity with the patients. Tuberville is living with stage four of the disease himself. In 2012, doctors gave Tuberville a maximum of two years to live. He's outlived his prognosis by twice that. When he heard the grim news at the age of 54, Tuberville determined to live out whatever remained of his life with as much gusto as he could muster.
